Maot
Hittin
It
is particularly appropriate that, as we recall the forging of the
Jewish people into a unit during the Exodus, we express our solidarity
with all our Jewish brothers and sisters. It is a time-honored practice
to distribute aid to needy Jews for meeting the special expenses
connected with Pesah. This aid is called maot hittin, "wheat
money," for originally it was distributed in order for people
to buy wheat to be ground into Pesah flour.
One may discharge
one's obligation to aid the needy at Pesah time individually or through
the synagogue. Rabbi Barnard collects maot hittin through the Rabbi's
Discretionary Fund at the synagogue. We should also support the
Cincinnati
Pesach Delivery Project, which provides seder essentials for families
in our community. This project, which began at Northern Hills Synagogue,
is now run by Jewish Family Service.
